David Hendry is a horrific-looking creature whose family kept him locked away ever since he was born. He is barely recognizable as human; he has a pair of batwings, 4 eyes, 6 arms and retractable claws. He is covered with black fur and is incredibly strong. He was rescued by mutants from the Underground, a maze of tunnels under St. Paul occupied by mutants who wanted to keep themselves hidden from society and its prejudices. Caribbean Blue found him during a telepathic sweep (back when the Underground was actively recruiting) and it was no difficult matter for Lien, the telekinetic, to break the shutters and the boy to fly out. He was thirteen at the time and is now sixteen.
Dave lived happily in the Underground until a month ago. The criminal mutants of Team Vermin staged a bloody takeover of the Underground, but were later driven out by the machinations (that's what Eric, the new leader called them, maybe they're like gadgets or something) of Foxfire. Caribbean Blue got Dave out of the Underground during the initial takeover. All he knows about Team Vermin is that they killed several of his friends. Dave and his friends returned to the tunnels and were protected by Team Justice, who drove off several more raids by Team Vermin. Then, a rich person in St. Paul declared that all the business-places she owned were equal-opportunity for mutants and many of the Undergrounders left to work for her (her name is Leslie Armitage-Vandaleur).
Dave was eager to do big things for the Underground and impress the new leaders, but Foxfire of Team Justice invited him to join the hero academy and that sounded even better. A chance to strike a blow for mutant rights by becoming a mutant superhero on a well-respected team! Just after Dave and most of the other mutants left, the older ones disappeared. Foxfire said they had somewhere to go and are alright.
