- Assessment of student learning about science in light of prior knowledge.

Analysis of past vegetation changes using fossil pollen and charcoal. Areas of
current interest include the response of vegetation to climate and to fire
frequency.

Reconstruction of lake history through diatom analysis, especially the response
of diatoms to climate change.

Modern vegetation dynamics, particularly the role of interspecific competition
and fire in succession.
