From August 2000 through June 2001, I was teaching for the University of Maryland - European Division, which involved a lot of travel, both for work and for fun. I have a digital camera, so I took pictures wherever I go. The European Division has its headquarters in Heidelberg, a very pretty old German city in a valley, with a castle (the schloss) and a trail up into the mountains, the "Philosopher's Way".
My first assignment was at an airbase near Adana, Turkey, where I got to do lots of touring with my friend, fellow Maryland professor Ernie Tiemann. We visited nearby Roman sites and Cappadocia. The area of Adana itself has plenty of historic and scenic stuff. During the second and third terms, I taught American peacekeepers in Bosnia-Herzegovina. My boss there took myself and two colleagues to Sarajevo, the capitol. It's a lovely old city, despite the shelling it took in the recent civil war.
In between terms 2 and 3, I visited London and my Mom and I went on a tour of Spain. We visited Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, Ronda, and the Costa del Sol. One of the high points of the tour was a visit to Grenada and the
Alhambra, the beautiful palace of the last Moorish prince. We also got to make side trips to
Gibraltar, a British possession, the rock guarding the entrance to the Mediterranean, and Tangiers, in Morocco.
My last assignment teaching in on a naval base in Bahrain, an island east of Saudi Arabia. After term 3, I spent a week in Paris, France. In June, I went on bus tours of England, Scotland, and Central Europe.
