The Green Man is an figure, usually carved, found in churches all over Europe. A typical Green Man is a human head made of foliage, but other figures such as heads with foliage coming out of the mouth, are also Green Men. They are assumed to be some Pagan icon appropriated by the Christian church, but they aren't mentioned in medieval writings, so no-one knows what they symbolize.
I have some photos of Green Men in York Minster , a medieval church in northern England and some more modern ones from London .
